DEVELOPING A TREATMENT PLAN

BE READY & BE HEARD

Your healthcare provider may ask about your symptoms, lifestyle, and/or medical history:

  • When did you notice your symptoms?
  • How frequently do your symptoms show up?
  • Can you attribute your symptoms to anything?

That’s why it is important to speak up at your next visit – educate yourself on fibromyalgia so you can have a productive conversation with your healthcare provider. Be open and honest and remember the conversation should go both ways.

If you think you may have fibromyalgia, or have been diagnosed and your current treatment is not working, then consider SAVELLA and ask your healthcare provider if it may be right for you.

About Fibromyalgia

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a common, chronic medical condition that affects an estimated 4 million people in the United States. Despite its prevalence, fibromyalgia is commonly undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Although fibromyalgia impacts both men and women of all ages, it is most common among women (80-90% of cases). The average age of diagnosis is 35 to 45 years old – symptoms may appear much earlier. There is a range of symptoms associated with fibromyalgia, including chronic, widespread pain and tenderness lasting more than 3 months.

What causes fibromyalgia?

The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown. Existing evidence shows that fibromyalgia is not caused by muscle inflammation. Many experts believe that fibromyalgia is associated with changes in the processing of pain signals in the brain and spinal cord. So for someone living with fibromyalgia, sensitivity to pain is heightened due to this change in pain processing. Learn more about the causes of fibromyalgia.

Diagnosing fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a condition that can be misdiagnosed. And, sadly, some patients spend years seeing many healthcare providers before they are diagnosed and get the help they need. But fibromyalgia is a condition that can be managed with proper treatment. Keep in mind, effective management of fibromyalgia often requires a team effort. You should work closely with a healthcare provider who is familiar with treating it, and who may advise you to take medication and make lifestyle changes.
